Alegria’s Tebboune Urges Judiciary to Continue Fight Against Crime, Corruption

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune praised on Monday the judiciary’s efforts in the fight against corruption and crime.

During the opening of the 2023-2024 judicial year, he called on the judiciary to perform its role fully and thwart all attempts to undermine justice.

“I would like to express the state’s appreciation for the efforts of the judiciary in protecting rights and combating crime and corruption. I also salute the commitment of all judges to faithfully and loyally fulfill their responsibilities,” said Tebboune.

The session was attended by government staff, chief of staff Said Chengriha, and prominent figures from the judicial authorities.

The president is viewed as the “top judge” in the country according to the constitution.

Tebboune pledged more efforts to accelerate the pace of case processing, complete digital transformation, and leverage electronic justice mechanisms while ensuring greater flexibility and simplification of judicial procedures.

Since the ouster of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika in 2019, judicial authorities have been handling hundreds of corruption cases. Several officials, including three premiers, two heads of intelligence, two heads of the Gendarmerie, and the head of police, are facing charges.

The judiciary has also been severely criticized for imprisoning more than 300 activists based on “politically motivated” charges.
