Pro-Palestine Demonstration in Jakarta: A Call for Ceasefire and Condemnation of Israeli Attacks

Participants of the pro-Palestine demonstration, titled “Aksi Akbar Bela Palestina” or “Grand Action to Defend Palestine”, began to disperse from the National Monument (Monas) area in Jakarta, Indonesia on Sunday (5/11/2023). The demonstration, organized by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), and attended by laborers and farmers, aimed to advocate for a ceasefire and condemn the attacks and killings by Israel on the Palestinian people. Despite the crowd’s close proximity, they managed to leave in an orderly manner, chanting prayers as they left.

Peaceful Protest Amidst Global Tensions
Estimated to be in the tens of thousands, the demonstration dispersed peacefully with participants chanting prayers. The peaceful protest was monitored by a total of 3,448 combined personnel deployed to secure the demonstration. This demonstration in Jakarta is part of a global wave of protests advocating for peace and justice for Palestine, with similar demonstrations taking place in capital cities around the world, including Washington D.C., London, Paris, Berlin, Santiago, and Caracas.

Indonesian Government’s Support for Palestine
The demonstration was attended by prominent Indonesian figures, including Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, and Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives Puan Maharani. Their presence signaled the Indonesian government’s support for the Palestinian cause and their commitment to advocating for a ceasefire. In addition to the demonstration, the Indonesian government also sent 51.5 tons of humanitarian aid to Palestine, including food, medicine, clothing, and other items.

Global Solidarity for Palestine
The global wave of protests and humanitarian aid sent by the Indonesian government are part of diplomatic efforts to raise awareness of the Palestinian issue and support the Palestinian people. These protests highlight the urgency of the situation in Palestine and the need for immediate action to end the violence and suffering. They are also a clear message to the international community that the plight of the Palestinian people cannot be ignored and that action must be taken to address the ongoing crisis.
